OVERCOMING FEAR OF FAILURE. PART 1

It’s very important to believe you are the one to do it- Les Brown

He was born in an abandoned building, adopted and labeled as educable mentally retarded early in school. His life is a story of perseverance and hustle to get where he is right now.

 

Label

Shortly after being born on the floor of an abandoned building in poor side of Miami, Les Brown and his twin brother were adopted by Mamie Brown, a kitchen worker and maid. When Les was in 5th grade he was labeled as educable mentally retarded and put back from the 5th grade to 4th grade. Same thing happened again in the 8th grade. Upon graduation, he became a city sanitation worker in Miami Beach. But he had a dream of being a disc jockey. At night, he would take a transistor radio to bed where he listened to the local jive-talking deejays. He created an imaginary radio station in his tiny room with its torn vinyl flooring. A hairbrush served as his microphone as he practiced his patter, introducing records to his imaginary listeners. He was wrapped up in his own world, living a dream.

 

Greatest gift

He didn’t receive any collage training but one particular speech and drama instructor changed his life. His name was Leroy Washington. Mr. Washington gave him a greatest gift anyone can ever give. A different vision of himself. When Les was in his class waiting for a different student, Mr. Washington said “Young man go to board and work this problem out for me”.Oh, Sir I can’t do that” – replied Les.Why not?” - said the teacher.  “I’m not one of your students”.  While looking at him Mr. Washington said: “Go to that board and work the problem out”. With a trembling voice Les mumbled “Sir I can’t do that, because I’m educable mentally retarded. I’m in special education”. The students started laughing and they said: “That’s Lesley. Not Wesley. His DT. Wesley is the smart twin”.  “What is DT stand’s for?” – said Mr. Washington.  Lesly relied with a shame on his face: “I’m the dumb twin, Sir”. As the students laugh at him, Mr. Washington came from behind and looked at him: “Don’t you ever say that again. Someone’s opinion of you does not have to become your reality”. On the one hand Les was humiliated but on the other hand he felt liberated.

 

Worth doing badly

From felling free he looked at his goals and dreams and said to himself How am I going to do that? He went straight from his heart to his mind and he stayed up there for 14 years.  The first time Les stood up to speak publicly his mind set down. He looked at the audience and he panicked. He had to introduce a play but he ran of the stage. Mr. Washington said to him: “If you run now, you will always be running. Anything that’s is worth doing, is worth doing badly until you get it right. Go back out there”. Other students dog him out and he became the laughing-stock of the whole school

 

Breaking the fear

Another event came out Mr. Washington said: Mr Brown you’re up. Les went up and pretty soon when people laughed at him it didn’t even bother him. Later one day he came out and he came to himself. He broke out of that fear and in front of the whole school gave the first of his great speeches.

 

DJ

One day Les boldly went to the local radio station during his lunch break from mowing grass for the city. He got into the station manager’s office and told him he wanted to be a disc jockey. When it turned out that he didn’t have any background in broadcasting, it was the end of the conversation. But young Les was far from being over. His commitment to his goal was remarkable. Les had strong enough reasons, higher purpose than simply wanting to be a disc jockey. He wanted to buy a nicer house for his adoptive mother, whom he loved deeply. This job was just the step on the way.

Patience

And so Les returned to the station every day for a week, asking if there were any job openings. Finally, the station manager gave in and took him as a free intern. Les did whatever was asked of him at the station – and more. While hanging out with the deejays, he studied their movements on the control panel. At night, he practiced and prepared himself for the opportunity that he knew would present itself.

 

Opportunity

One Saturday afternoon it did. Because of his persistence and preparation, Les was ready. He wowed the audience and his general manager. As you pursue your dream, you are becoming stronger and smarter. In one of his speeches he said: There will be times when doors of opportunity open up for you as you walk your path. Stay focused and stay true to your dream, and more doors will open up for you.

 

Mental conditioning

When he watched Dr Norman Vincent Peale speak publicly he thought: I could do that. I would love to talk to people. I can do that. But when he started going back to his car his mental conditioning activated itself and it said: Les Brown you can’t do that. You don’t have a college education. You don’t have the training. You’ve never worked for major corporation. What makes you think you can?

 

Floor

It was hard when Les entered the motivational speaking arena in the mid-1980s, he had virtually nothing but one tape of his motivational speeches. He rented an office in Pen Penobscot Building in Detroit, Michigan and he felt on some hard times. He was sleeping on the floor in his office. In one of his great speeches just three years later he said: “I didn't even want a blanket or a pallet on the floor. I wanted it to be hard and cold so it would motivate me to keep striving. I didn't want to get soft." It was hard for him when had to read a letter from bulling management that he cannot sleep in his office. It was hard for him to go through the lobby and get laughed out.

 

Dream

Pursuing your dream, you will face disappointments, defeats and failures. But that’s okay. That’s given. Dreams are supposed to be hard to reach – that’s why they are called dreams. It’s very important (to know) when you hold on to that dream, there are moments when you’re going to doubt yourself. Rough times are gonna come but they have not come to stay. They have come to pass – Less Brown

Water or soda?

Do you ever have a choice between a glass of water and a glass of soda and you pick the soda because “well if you have a glass of soda today, it’s not like you’re going to wake up overweight and unhealthy tomorrow?”

 

Paradox

That’s basically how we all like to think that somehow, success only comes from doing huge, important things right. We have that big paradox. On one hand, you’re right. The little decision doesn’t really matter. This one decision won’t really affect your health in any significant way, right? Getting drunk one time won’t ruin your life. Eating chips when you feel instant urge won’t make you unhealthy. Examples are everywhere.

 

Power of compounding

But on the other hand, it’s really the only thing that matters. Because in a year, you will be the result of your every little decision compounded. We simply are humongous piles of our own decisions. It’s not about judging anyone but it’s especially easy to notice in our physical appearances. We can all agree that not everybody’s going to be an athlete but we can easily spot if someone is working out 4 times a week for last 3 years, right?

 

Easy (not) to do

In essence, every little decision matters. And these little things are easy to do. When you’re on your lunch break tomorrow can make a choice of drinking water instead of soda, fruit instead of cake, vegetables instead of fat fries. Anyone is capable of doing that. But since it’s so easy to do, it is also easy not to do, and just order the soda.

 

Patience

But what if you decide to do this little thing right? You won’t be any healthier the next day, but after a year you would see huge health benefits from it. We have to stop thinking just about instant pleasure because the true reward is usually postponed.

 

Working out

I have come back to working out in the beginning of January. I haven’t been doing that for last couple of years. At least not regularly. Now it’s 6 times a week. Just 30 to 40 minutes in the evening. It has become such a vital part of my moonlight. I’m not falling asleep over my laptop any more. I feel a lot more energized and I don’t feel any muscle or joint pains any more. What’s quite suppressing to me is that it was fairly easy and there were only few days when I really had to push myself to do it.

 

Decision

Just two days ago, I went to catch up with my best buddies. One of them told me how he stopped eating sweets 9 month ago. He said: ”I really loved sweets and I was really nurturing that emotion. When I was coming back to my parent’s house I was everything they had. If they had a whole bowl of candy I was on it until it was empty. Sometimes when I was at home working on my laptop in the evening I was eating three regular bars of cholate in one sitting. I love it. One day I’ve really decided to stop”. Now after 9 month he feels energized, healthier, lighter. He doesn’t experience neither energy swings nor huge sugar urges. Every once in a while, he allows himself to eat a piece of cake but this is just a reward. It’s not an urge, instinct or a habit. This allows him to really enjoy the moment.

     

Investment

We can apply this to anything. Like Reading. What’s if you decide to read for 15 minutes a day before going to bed? That’s pretty easy to do. But since it’s pretty easy to do, it’s also pretty so easy to ignore it. If you read for 15 minutes tonight you won’t suddenly wake up smarter or more enlighten tomorrow morning. But what about a year from now? That’s going to be at least 6 books. 6 good books can literally turn you to completely different person. Whether it will be related to finances, sales, accounting, relationships or overall happiness. But first you need to make that decision.   

 

Every little decision

Paradox – on one hand you can fall for the unsuccessful mindset ‘well, it’s not like this little decision matters’ but in reality, the little decisions we make are all that matters. Every little decision of yours will be compounded at the end of the year. Who you are will be the result of it all. Neither you, me nor anyone else will be able to control every piece of our behavior. Luckily, we are not those little robots which do everything right. But at least we are more aware of how we think about little things and we can change them piece by piece. 

 

It counts

Try to align more of your little decision with your vision. The more you can do it the closer you will be to the person you really want to become. Take responsibility for where you are in life. It’s always us who decide to buy that soda.

100 DAYS OF CHANGE A MONTH TO REMEMBER

January is already over and I really wanted to tell you what happened during that 31 days. You might think what could possibly have changed in a single month? Did anything change at all or am I just embellishing reality? Bear with me and you’ll find out.

DaybyDay

Let’s start with the biggest thing right away. If I could only name one thing that made the biggest difference and gave the best outcomes, without any hesitation I would say scheduling and organizing my day before and after work. This doesn’t sound like anything big but it’s really huge. Scheduling each upcoming week on the Sunday evening gave me clarity and focus. This single thing allowed me to accomplish and finish more things in this single month then in previous three months. Thanks to the excel workbook (8 sheets) I have created I see both my daily, weekly, monthly goals as well as my vision for this year and future after that.

 

Mine of time

Organizing my day and blocking time for each thing I want to do is the great time mine of time. It’s a great discovery of time you think you don’t have. You have it. It’s right there. But you have to go to that mine and for dig it.

 

Easy

Subpage for Failure Stories been on my mind for at least one month before. There wasn’t too much work behind it but somehow, I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t decide. As soon as it was scheduled it sure for me that it’s going to be done. And it was done in one evening. 

 

Sudden

On the other hand, subpage for 100 days of Change was a quick and sudden idea. A lot more work but I really wanted to do it. I have decided to do it when it was still fresh and compelling. Two evenings of my grind and a few more for implementation by my wonderful wife. Although it was not in my plan for January but I’m so happy we did this.

 

Delayed

For last six months, I wanted to build portfolio saving structure for our family. We were saving but not allocating it in the way I though was best for us. I was procreating to create that portfolio setup. Turned out to be 6 excel sheets, lots of formulas done in just two evenings. Something that was on my mind for six months was done in two evenings. 8 hours. How easy is to catch up on the things we are procrastinating?  

 

Visualization

This is vital part of my morning routine. Either done during the morning run or in front of the mirror. Thinking about three things I’m grateful and smiling to the mirror is a best way to start my day. This wakes and strengthens my empathy for others and my overall happiness. Second part of this process is visualization of my milestone goals and daily tasks. Clouds and dirt. Rocks and sand. Call it whatever you want. Reading and rehearsing my vision gives me an incredible boost of energy to grind and hustle every day.

 

New Habits

30-minute evening workouts became such a vital part of my moonlight. 27 times in 31 days. I feel a lot more energized and I don’t feel any muscle or joint pains any more. This habits is definitely going to stay. What’s quite suppressing to me is that it was fairly easy and there were only few days when I really had to push myself to do it.

 

Last thing on the list

On the other hand, reading for 15 minutes right before going to bed wasn’t easy at all. This was a struggle almost every day. I wanted to do such much on each evening that when it was the time for the last thing on the list, which is reading, I was almost falling asleep. 25 times doesn’t look so bad but there is a lot to improve here.

 

Week themes

This was kind a small reminder of one general thing I wanted to practice and pay attention to during each week. Posture/body language, voice (for two weeks), gestures, energy while speaking. Although you may not see or hear the difference, I do. I pay a lot more attention to those four areas. When I catch myself on doing something like e.g. shrinking my body or mumbling I instantly stop and change it. Theme weeks are about of practice but even more about self-awareness.   

 

Temptation

I have decided I’m not going to eat any sweets during the week. Only on weekends. After Christmas, our cupboard was full of sweets, what made it a lot harder to accomplish. It was easy and pleasant when I was full of energy and feeling great. But when I was tired it was getting tricky. Temptation was getting bigger but I managed to contain it. During the first weekend, I probably eat too much sweets but now I almost don’t feel any urge at all. Even though we still have some of the same sweets in the cupboard I doesn’t take any willpower from me not to eat them. Not anymore. Decision is taken. Habit is created.      

 

9 is better than none

9 runs.  I’m not particularly happy with that. I was aiming at 13 but 9 is better than none.  I was struggling with getting up for the first three weeks but now I think it’s a little bit easier. I’ve adjusted my running schedule to better fit DaybyDay plan. When I’m able to sleep for 6 or 7 hours is quite easy to wake up and run. But when it’s 5 and a half or less it takes a lot from me. When I do actually run in the morning it’s incredible feeling and I know the day is going to mine. So, it’s time to fix it.    

 

Progress. Growth. Happiness.

All in all, this 100 days of Change gives me so much energy to perform on a higher level. There is so much time for extra tiny activities that I feel a great progress every day. I know I’m on the mission to change my life one small step after the other. Progress. Growth. Happiness.

How many of you know Jim Carrey, either from his stand-up comedy or from his many successful films, including Dumb and Dumber, Mask, Liar Liar, The Truman Show, or A Series of Unfortunate Events? When you think of the elements that played the most vital role in his success you would probably mention talent, hard work, luck, maybe patience. You are hundred percent right but there is one more thing you are missing. Bear with to learn what is the one ingredient 99 percent of us are missing.  

 

Adversity

You might think that anyone as talented as Jim must had a great home background and went to a great school with plenty of money to afford the best of training. Think again.

It’s hard to believe that in his early years at school Jim was quiet and not very sociable. Before he became the Jim we all know he had to fight hard at school around his learning disability and dyslexia. In this struggle, he developed a phenomenal memory which turned out to be vital skill later in his stand up and acting carrier. Although his dad tended to encourage his craziness, his mom was alarmed and often sent him to his room. This just gave him more time to practice in front of the mirror.

 

Discovery

Discovering that he could make friends by simply making people laugh, was his true turning point that would affect his entire future. Although we know how he turned out to be, the results of his discovery back then weren’t all that positive. At home, he thoroughly enjoyed making faces and mimicking in his mirror. In school, he was finishing his work first and then disrupting the rest of the class. That was his way of screaming for attention. So rather than discipline him for disrupting the class, one of his teachers asked him to put together an act and perform it for the class at the end of the school day, on the condition that he would do his work and not disturb the class. He thought this was a great idea and went along with it.

 

Sacrifice

His ambitions and courage were on display when he began to think beyond just entertaining his fellow students. At age ten he sent his resume’ to actress Carol Burnette, hoping to be discovered. As we know it took him another few years to crawl to the top.

Money was another hurdle. His family lived in a rough district with lots of low-rent townhouses. By the tenth grade he was trying to juggle eight-hour night shifts at the factory with school during the day. He was so exhausted that he couldn't understand what his teachers were talking about. At that time, he didn't have any friends at school and he feared that anyone getting close might find out about his embarrassing poverty. Not having enough time to study nor to nurture school friendships he felt that school was not getting him anywhere. He called it quits at 16.

 

Hardships

His family decided that their surroundings were taking them the wrong direction, so they packed up and moved to Canada with no job in sight. His parents and two siblings lived in a beat-up yellow Volkswagen camper van for a full eight months, parking in campgrounds. Feeling intellectually backward, inferior, embarrassed and experiencing hardships of poverty paved the way to his success by making him feel that he had to try harder than others. Lots of his creativity, as well as his remarkable willingness to take risks were born out of those moments desperation.   

 

Check

In 1983, Jim headed west to Hollywood where he starred playing small parts in television movies. He was another struggling young comic trying to make his way in Los Angeles. When he wasn’t doing anything in Hollywood, he was driving his old Toyota up to Mulholland Drive and sitting in his car. While sitting there looking at the city below and dreaming of his future, he wrote himself a check for $10 million, dated it Thanksgiving 1995, added the notation “for acting services rendered” and carried it in his wallet from that day forth. On top of that he was saying to himself “Everyone wants to work with me. I’m a really good actor. I have all kinds of great movie offers.” 

 

Affirmation

He would just repeat these things over and over, literally convincing himself that he had a couple of movies lined up. He’d drive down that hill, ready to take the world on, going, “Movie offers are out there for me, I just don’t hear them yet.” This total affirmation was his own way of dealing with stems from his family background.

 

Not so Dumb after all

His appearances in TV programs led to a main role on the hit comedy In Living Color. After many years, Jim’s optimism, tenacity and conviction eventually paid off. By 1995, after the huge box office success of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb & Dumber, his wage for a picture went up to $20 million.

 

Every day

Jim Carrey used his hard times and set-backs to motivate him to try harder. He channeled his energy to making something special out of his life. But my biggest take from his story is that he was so convinced of his self-worth, he had a very specific goal and was envisioning it on a daily basis. It’s not only about having a plan, goal or dream, it’s even more about engaging with that vision on emotional level and working on it every day. Create a vision for your life but don’t freeze on just hoping it’s magically going to happen. Nothing will ever happen if you won’t start putting it to work.

January 15th

How is your new year coming out so far? How is your plan? How are your resolutions? Are you still working out? Are you still on a diet? Are still learning every day? I know it’s early. Yesterday was January 15th. But you know what that day mean, don’t you? January 15th is the Cut Off. Statistics show that 95 percent of the people that actually made a new year’s resolution, have already broken it by today. And that’s if you even made a resolution.

 

Beyond resolution

Now if you are exception to that I’m thrilled for you. I support you. Keep grinding, hustling and rocking it. But if you missed maybe I can help you not only recover but get way beyond new year’s resolution and make some real lasting changes in your life (100 days of change- article).

 

Why bother?

Most people don’t even make those new year’s resolutions, but why? They have been making them so many times, for so many years and they know they’re not going to follow through. After a while who want to disappoint themselves? Who wants to be upset with themselves? Why even bother to set a new standard? You know it’s going to be the same way as last years. If you are still reading this then obviously, you’re not that kind of person.

 

3 biggest mistakes

There are some common mistakes we are all making, once we try to change any given part of our life. I have been making all of repeatedly even after knowing what I really needed to do. Those mistakes are not any kind of a secret. You know that perfectly well but knowledge without execution is not worth a dime. Three biggest mistake:

 

1. Vision

First step for lasting change is that you’ve got to have a vision. A vision for what your really, truly want. Not about what you don’t want but what you are here to achieve. It can only work when it really excites you. The bottom line of our follow through comes down to our emotional intensity. In a different state of mind you are going to come up with much better and more exciting vision than you would while sitting little inebriated on your couch on January 1st. It has got compelling. It has got to be a gift. Give yourself a gift of a really wonderful vision.

 

2. Reasons

Along with this compelling vision you’ve got to have a strong enough reason that are going to help you follow through when it’s going to get tough. That’s one of the biggest change ingredients missing for most people. You can be sure that somewhere along the way, it’s going to get really tough. Challenges are inevitable. You will be tired, you might be stressed or sick, you won’t have time, outside circumstances might destroy your plans. Those are the moments when your reasons have to pull you. You don’t let the fear take you over when you have strong enough reasons. Reasons come first, answers come second.

If you have compelling vision and you have strong enough reasons, it will push you though tough times. Instead of collapsing, you will do things other people won’t do. Even if you get of target, you will get right back. Make the change. Make things happen.

 

3. Review

You have got to review it and feel it every day. Have you ever wanted something so badly, you had such hunger for it, that you couldn’t stop thinking about it? You need to wake that hunger once again. You need to develop emotional relationship between you and your desired outcome. Once you start to keep thinking about it, envisioning it, imagining it, feeling it, you will attract things and people to your life. It will become a major part of your focus, with emotions and intensity that you will notice anything that can get you there.

 

What happened?

What people do with new year’s resolutions?  They come up with something they kind of want. It’s not a compelling vision. They really don’t have strong enough reasons and they never review it until they’ve noticed that they’ve broke what they said they really wanted to happen. They didn’t really resolve.

 

Set yourself to win

When you really get clear on your reasons, your vision is compelling and you are reviewing it every day, the brain becomes incredibly acute at noticing anything that can get you move forward. And you find a way.

Entrepreneur, cartoonist, animator, voice actor, and film producer. Before he became the legend, we know, he was fired by the newspaper editor because he “lacked imagination and had no good ideas.” 

 

Mouse on the screen

Can you imagine anyone being afraid of Mickey Mouse? No? Neither can I but Walt Disney was told that Mickey Mouse would not work since a huge mouse on the screen would terrify women. Well, it seems that women were not scared and this mouse continues to share his story on screens all over the world.

 

You are dismissed

In 1919 while working for a newspaper, Disney was struggling to make ends meet. At one point, he was fired by the newspaper editor because he “lacked imagination and had no good ideas”. In January 1920, Disney formed his first animation company, which was called Laugh-O-Gram Films. He raised $15,000 for the company but following a rough start he was eventually forced to close Laugh-O-Gram, and go to earn money at the Kansas City Film Ad Company. He was soon joined by his partner, who were not able to run their business by himself.

 

City of broken dreams

Sometime later Disney he acquired a successful studio but profits were insufficient to cover the high salaries paid to employees. After studio became loaded with debt it wound up bankrupt. Disney was desperate and out of money.  In July 1923, Walt sold his camera and, with the little money he had, moved to Hollywood. Disney faced even more criticism and failure.

 

Wonderland

He had decided he wanted to be in the motion picture business and envisioned himself as a director, so he set out to look for a job. Every studio in town turned him down. In the face of another failure he had sent his unfinished project Alice’s Wonderland to different distributers. One of them offered him a deal and with his brother Roy and best friend Iwerks they have created Disney Brothers’ Studio.

 

(Not so) Lucky Rabbit

One of his first huge successes in the cartooning business was Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. It was so successful that it was shown in major theatres around the country with first–run films. At that time, Walt was only receiving a 20 percent cut on his films and was ready to negotiate higher share, since he was barely earning anything. But his producer had other plans.  

 

Not Walt

He decided he no longer needed Walt, and by hiring Walt’s animation crew he could produce the cartoon himself. As distributer, he had the rights to do what he liked with the cartoon. It was another devastating lesson for Walt. Most of the people would cave or run home with the tail between their legs. Most of the people but not Walt. He decided then and there that he would now only work on characters to which he owned the rights.

 

Mortimer

Walt desperately needed a brand-new idea. In the back of his mind he had the idea of a mouse – a sympathetic character that had a lot of potential. He called the mouse Mortimer, the name eventually changed to Mickey Mouse thanks to the insistence of his wife.

 

Astounding duo

Mickey had his own live voice–overs, sound–effect people, and an orchestra. Walt’s vison of Mickey’s voice was very specific and unique but he could not find anyone who could replicate the way he imagined it to be. So, it was Walt himself who voiced Mickey. This astounding duo made front–page news.

 

All in

In 1932, Walt discovered the new phenomenon of technicolor and wanted to create a feature–length cartoon about Snow White. People in Hollywood sneered at that idea because no one could even imagine it.  He was told by his banker that he would be risking everything he had on this one film. But Walt believed in his vision for the company, and he believed in this retelling of Snow White enough to go through with it. The film received both critical acclaim and commercial success. Money flowed in, erasing the entire studio debt within 6–months. Walt received an Academy Award for what was yet another risk that had paid off.

 

War

Fantasia was one of Walt’s most unusual and unique projects. His vision was to reproduce the sensation of listening to music in a concert hall accompanied with visual stimulation. He was onto an earlier version of stereo–phonic sound. The total budget of this project, however, was more than $2 million. Just as the Disney Company seemed to be reaching new heights, war broke out. Overseas income ceased funding the construction of the new Burbank studio, and although newly launched animated movies Fantasia and Pinocchio were considered Disney Masterpieces, they did not provide the revenue the company needed.

 

Debt

By 1941 the studio was half–a–million dollars in–debt. But this didn’t stop him. Actually, nothing ever did. He did not let a string of failures overcome him, standing strong even through his toughest times. After every storm, there is a rainbow. The next decade was a period of great financial expansion for Disney. It went from of $6 million profit at the start of the decade to $70 million at the end.

 

Failure is necessary

The company that Walt has left behind has reached phenomenal success. It all started from one very innovative and passionate man who demanded the highest quality and wasn’t afraid to experiment and fail with every endeavor.

This is a remarkable story of Colonel Harland Sanders. A Man who started at 62 and failed 1009 times before succeeding.  This story is inspirational because it’s an example of how perseverance, dedication, and ambition along with hard work can create success; regardless of your age.

 

Icon

Colonel Harland Sanders has become a world-known figure by marketing his “finger lickin’ good” Kentucky Fried Chicken. He was the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). However, most people know him because of his iconic white suit, black string tie and walking cane. His statues are almost all over the world since KFC is present in about 118 countries.

 

Retirement

One of the most amazing thing is that he just started when most of us are already finishing. While most people can’t wait to start being really lazy he started to be really busy. At the age of 62, after running a restaurant for several years, Colonel Sanders retired and received his first social security check for $105. And it wasn’t until the age of 65 when he sold his first restaurant, when he truly started to build his global fried chicken empire.  

 

Biggest Asset

Col. Sanders loved to share his fried chicken recipe and in return people were telling him how much they loved it. This helped him build an incredible confidence and certainty in his recipe. He was determined to sell the world on his delicious chicken secret.  Not having much at his disposal, Colonel Sanders decided to use his biggest asset. Try to think what is one of the biggest assets of most people who are retired? It’s Time. Using that to the fullest he traveled door to door to houses and restaurants all over his local area. He wanted to partner with someone to help promote his chicken recipe. Needless to say, he was met with little enthusiasm.

 

1009 rejections

In those tough times of rejection confidence in his recipe helped him perceiver and be persistent in his hustle. But if he wouldn’t learn from his failures and if he wouldn’t keep on changing his approach it probably wouldn’t get him anywhere. After being rejected many times he started to cook his fried chicken on the spot for restaurant owners. If the owner liked the chicken, they would enter into a handshake agreement to sell the Colonel’s chicken. Legend has it that Colonel Sanders was turned down 1009 times before his chicken was accepted once.  

 

Deal?

The deal was that for each piece of chicken the restaurant sold, Sanders would receive a nickel. The restaurant would receive packets of Colonel’s secret herbs and spices in order to avoid them knowing the recipe. The first restaurant that he landed was based out of Salt Lake City, Utah, which became the first Kentucky Fried Chicken. The restaurant tripled its sales within a year where 75% of that revenue was from the colonel’s chicken.

 

Exit

The company grew and expanded faster than he could have ever imagined. In 1964, at the age of 74 years old, Colonel Sanders had 600 franchises selling his trademark chicken. He sold the company for $2 million dollars to a group of investors led by Jack C. Massey and John Y. Brown Jr. But he retained the rights to the Canadian franchises and stayed on as a salaried goodwill ambassador to the company. In 1976, the Colonel was ranked as the world’s second most recognizable celebrity. This just goes to show us that it doesn’t matter how old we are or just how much money we have to our name in order to accomplish something great.

 

Secret recipe

Did he succeeded because he had proper connections? Did he have the best education? Large capital in the beginning? Incredible marketing abilities? Was he very well situated? Born with any advantages? Was he young when he started? No. None of this is true. There is only one reason for his success. He knew what he wanted and he took massive action.

“…Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one arena I believed I truly belonged” – J.K. Rowling

She is as one of the world’s most successful authors. Many people simply know her as the woman who created Harry Potter. But, what most of us don’t know is what she went through prior to reaching her vision. Her life was not a bad of roses. She struggled tremendously. “I had failed on an epic scale. An exceptionally short-lived marriage had imploded, and I was jobless, a lone parent, and as poor as it is possible to be in modern Britain, without being homeless”. Does it sound easy for you?

 

The Idea

In 1990, Rowling first had the idea for Harry Potter. While she was on a train from Manchester to London fully formed idea suddenly came into her mind. She started a long process of creating a Harry Potter‘s world.  Later that year, her mother died after 10 long years of fighting Sclerosis. 

 

Three Chapters

Two years later she moved to Portugal to teach English. She got married and had a daughter. In 1993, her marriage ended in divorce and she moved to Edinburgh, Scotland to be closer to her sister. At that time, she had just three chapters of Harry Potter in her suitcase. When she finally finished those first three chapters, she sent the manuscript off to publishers but one after the other they quickly turned her down.

“I am not going to stand here and tell you that failure is fun. That period of my life was a dark one, and I had no idea that there was going to be”.

 

Broke single parent

Rowling saw herself as a failure at this time. She was a jobless, divorced and broke single parent. Suffering from depression, she eventually signed up for government-assisted welfare. She was in a very dark place and in a very difficult time in her life but she pushed through those adversities. Failure meant stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was, and began to direct all my energy into finishing the only work that mattered to me. Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one arena I believed I truly belonged”.

 

12 publishers

Somehow, she found determination and courage to finish her work. She sent it to other publishers, but again, the answer was no. Her mailbox filled up with rejection letters, but she was far from being over.

After sending her manuscript to 12 different publishers and getting rejected by every single one, she began losing confidence in her book.

 

8-year-old girl

A year later the editor Barry Cunningham from Bloomsbury publishing house read the manuscript. And so did his 8 year-old daughter. The little girl loved the opening three chapters so much, that she begged to read the whole thing. This made Cunningham to agree to publish Harry Potter. Bloomsbury made a deal and paid a very small £1500 advance to Rowling. The book was published in 1997 with only 1000 copies, half of which were distributed to libraries. Rowling was given an advice that she should get a day job, because she wouldn’t make any money writing children’s books.  Once Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was published, she simply proved everyone wrong.

 

107 million copies

The book won many awards including the British Book Award for Children’s Book of the Year. J.K. Rowling herself went from being a jobless single mother living off unemployment benefits to one of the bestselling authors of all time. But it didn’t happen overnight. She faced rejection and constantly strived for success. She worked hard at her craft before anyone noticed her. That practice, along with strengthening herself against rejection, was what made her work unforgettable. Looking back, the Harry Potter series has earned over $400 million in book sales only. With a 107 million copies sold, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is the 5th  on the list of bestselling books in the history. Rowling is the first female to become a billionaire author.

 

Dream

If you have a dream or a passion and you keep getting rejected or running into failure, don’t let that stop you. If you’re going through a tough time in your life, but you’re working on something you really believe in, don’t give up. If you do, you’ll never know what could have been. WHAT’S YOUR PRICE?

What’s possible for someone is also possible for you. That’s sounds very cliché, but that’s how I chose to see it. OK, but how can you get to the next level? You need to learn to dominate. You perfectly know how to compete but now is the time to learn how to get what you want from your life. Anybody can do this. This is not about your past, your experience, your education, it’s even not about your skills, it’s about massive amount of action.

 

What’s your price?

Whatever is your price, whatever you think you are worth, you’re going to get it. Whatever celling you’re going to put over your head, it will be visible to the whole world. If you are going to limit yourself, your prize will never exceed your expectations. One of my friends was applying to the same company I was working at, I’ve met her just before her interview and one of the thing she asked me was salaries in the company. She told me the price she wanted to put on herself and I was amazed how low it was. I was encouraging her to raise that price significantly but she ended up lifting it up just a little bit. In the end, she has got what she asked for and not a penny more. The company was not even negotiating. That should tell you something. The price tag you put on yourself, your skills, your work, your time will determine what you will get in return. You will never get more than you’ve asked for. Never.  The world will never appreciate you if you won’t. The world will never reward you if you won’t. What is you price now?

 

Wake your desire

Are you waiting for your vision to enlighten you? You need to decide what do you want your life to be about? Who do you want to be? What do you desire to go after? Sometimes to create your vision you need to go out there. Experience different things. Explore the world. Explore yourself. Stimulate your mind. Play and have fun with it. Desire is built on experience. Have desire for this journey to grow into the kind of person you would really admire.

 

Four elements

How to get there? How to get ahead? What are the ideas, the strategies to get ahead? There are four elements to get ahead, to progress, to grow.

 

  1.  Becoming more aware who you are and what is your mission. What specifically do you want to get ahead to? Be deliberate with your thoughts and actions you take. Consciously direct your life to your envisioned destination.

 

  1. Knowledge. Skills. Ability. Study your craft. What’s the thing you need to study on? Model and learn from most successful people in your field and start doing it over and over again. Learning at your own experience is the most expensive because it costs you time. How much time do you have to spare? Don’t wish anything to be easier and instead do anything to be better at it.

 

  1. If you really want to get ahead it’s going to take another level of commitment. If you want to live in your vision, raise the level of your commitment. Get rid of distractions and the thought that you can do anything and everything at the same time. Olympic athletes tend to shine in one discipline. Why? Because it takes that much commitment in one area to become great at it. That’s how you get ahead. Commit to being focused on most important actions and outcomes.

 

  1. To get congruent, you first need to get congruent with yourself. Find your magic. Be congruent with what you are really capable of, not with what you’re used to in your life. Change the way you think of yourself. Once you do that, your body and your unconsciousness behaviors will start moving towards that. Your body will desire to be congruent with your thoughts about yourself.

 

Clear direction

You have to have that clear direction in your mind. It needs to be as crystal clear and specific as possible. At any given moment in your life you can do only one thing. How do you choose what to do? Do you make that choice at all or do you let it be done for you? The outcomes of your life are based on the choices you make. Actually, the person you are today is simply an outcome of all your choices and decisions in life to this date. Are you clear on who you are and who you want to be? There is no shame in saying or thinking that you’re not sure. In fact, it takes a great deal of courage, congruence and honesty. Most of people have no idea but it doesn’t mean you need to be like them.

POWER OF QUESTIONS? PART 2 ONE QUESTION

Knowledge is having the right answer. Intelligence is asking the right question

We have previously learned in Power of Questions? Part 1 why it’s so important to start asking questions to yourself. Question yourself first and then start adding value to your life and other people life. Hopefully after reading this article you will jump with me on this one-day challenge. I am not asking for much. One day. One question. That’s it.

 

Tenacious curiosity

During the curse of our life we face a lot of problems, do you agree? Some people say that there are no problems only opportunities. Of course there are lessons to be learned in every problem, opportunity or failure but we still have to deal with them. There is a great technique to revel the roots of our problem, including inaction. It is the method of 5 Whys. It is a simple interrogative technique to explore the case, that was developed by Sakichi Toyoda and used at first by Toyota Corporation. The method simply comes to asking the question Why? As many times as it takes to raise emotions. In most cases after the 5th Why? you will discover the root cause of the problem. Besides releveling the nature of the case usually the solution will become clear. As I said the idea of this technique is very simple but getting it right is not so easy. You might think it is just asking few question, how hard it could be?

 

Requests for information

Well, this may come as a surprise for you, but as it turns out it’s problematic because we don’t really know how to ask questions. We ask questions without even thinking about them. How was school? How was work? Did you like it? Are we really looking for answers or are we just subconsciously feel obligated to ask them? First thing is that we are not really sure what information we want to get by asking those question? Questions are simply requests for information but we tend to forget about it. If we get to the third question, and most people stop at two, it has nothing to do at all with the first on. Even if we know what information we are looking for, we give up on this quest surprisingly easily. What you need to do to identify the roots of your inactions, is to practice asking questions based on the 5 Whys model.

 

Adding value

Those very simple and basic things will allow you to add a great amount of value to your life. If you’re asking yourself better and more specific questions you are going to discover greater capabilities within yourself. There is a lot in you that you don’t know yet. Don’t you want to uncover that?

 

Influencing

It will also allow you to influence others in a far greater way. I’m not talking about manipulating. I’m talking about helping, leading, motivating and inspiring. Once you are able to help others and ask them better questions, then you are going to be the person everyone always wants at the meeting. You are going to be the person everyone always wants to ask questions. You are going to become the influencer in the group because you’re helping people think of the things they wouldn’t usually do. If you will become that go to person, all the big ideas they have, they are going to want to bounce against you. Benefit from that and let others inspire you on your Journey. 

 

What do you want?

From being miserable at work, to loving it. Being successful means to me to be able to respond and actually anticipate the invitation of an upcoming opportunity. It is always an opportunity to grow, to develop, to become and to progress. But the biggest, the most fulfilling of all successes is making your life what you want it to be. Now the big question is What do you want from life? What do you really want?

 

Dig deeper

We have much more powerful capabilities than most of us think that we have. By asking the right questions you can control your fear. You can get your priories in line and understand what is going on. Questions build your vision, your dreams and your Journey. Don’t go for the first answers. Dig deeper. Go further. Don’t be ashamed to ask 5 follow up questions. Get into the core of the case or a problem. The more you understand something, the more confidence you have in that area. Ignorance and unawareness won’t get you anywhere. Ask more and better questions, learn more about your colleagues, your friends, your business partners, your employees and understand them better. In work and business environment we actually know very little about each other. By asking those question you will get a great connection point, a great start to your next small talk. You will get them more comfortable and get yourself a very powerful leverage of knowledge, trust and personal bond. Our life is long game but not all of us are playing a long game. Treat those question as investment and don’t expect a quick payback. Payback will come but you have to be patient.

 

One Question

Now I dare you to ask one extra question to each person you interact with at work. One question. Tomorrow. It could be interactions by the coffee machine, at the meeting, training session, by your desk, wherever. Make this question a little bit private. Don’t ask about weather. Make it positive and light. If you are asking How was your weekend? Try to go a little bit deeper. Look for good in others. Be creative. Be playful. Ask this one question, enrich your everyday interaction and relationship. One question. How hard it can be?
