People often say that motivation doesn’t last.

Well, neither does bathing - that’s why we recommend it daily – Zig Ziglar

Success is on a large scale determined by the degree of your motivation, your willpower and ‘motivation charge bar’. Motivation push you to actions and willpower allows to execute. This way after some time you create emotional bond with your desired outcome. When you feel emotionally engaged in the subject you learn faster. What can take somebody months, can take you only weeks. Emotions can fuel both your actions or inactions. It totally up to you. How do you want it to be?

Pain and Pleasure

Motivation is simply the level of eagerness to take that action. Your energy for action. You are either motivated to seek pleasure or avoid pain. Those two emotions are the main reason for your actions or inactions.

With pain and pleasure you motivate yourselves in two basic ways. You either say to yourself I don’t like where I am. I don’t like what I’ve done. I don’t like who I’ve become. We list all those things and we try to fix those deficiencies for the rest of our life. In this case we act out of scarcity and we always assume that there’s something wrong with us. There is always something missing. Your life becomes a struggle to be, to go somewhere else, to do, to engage. With this kind of wiring you will never get enough.

What we need to understand is that we already are everything we need to be. If you don’t know how to appreciate what you already have, you won’t know how appreciate anything else once you get it. Don’t’ be that person who just wants more and more. If you want to get ready for your Journey take who you are, what you have and accept it. Take the life in your hands and realize that everything that comes your way is an opportunity. Learn how to celebrate it.

Motivation peak

In that wonderful moment when you decide to start your Journey towards the goal, your vision, your dream, that’s when the level of your motivation is at its highest peak. That is great! That will get you going. You will work on your relationship or grasp that extra energy. You will go for that run, eat that healthy meal or whatever else you’re striving for. You have reached the motivation peak. Do you expect to be there forever? Do you know anyone who lives at the top of the mountain?

Motivation charge bar

When you cross that starting line do you ever considered how long will it last? How long does it take you to consume all your motivation? When your tank will be empty? When will you go broke? Do you expect it to fill itself?

I’m sure 99 percent of you never thought about it. Why would you, right? You are pushing yourself over that edge and you are focused on the beginning. Unfortunately, without two major components you won’t make it to the other side. We already have talked about the power of habits (How to create change / Easy route / Habits are your wings/Every little decision matter) and triggers (Pull your triggers / Hack your triggers). Second indispensable factor is having your motivation charged as many times and as much as possible. Learn what are your biggest chargers of motivation. Learn how to do it most effectively and then create a habit of using your best chargers daily.

All of us had something in life that we wanted more than anything else but regardless how hard we’ve tried, we couldn’t stay persistent on the necessary actions. Why can’t I get what I want? This may refer to staying on a diet, working out, learning new language, starting new endeavor, getting into business and sticking through the tough times. Do you know what I mean?

Willpower charge bar

We fail repeatedly giving ourselves an excuse that we didn’t have enough willpower to stay persistent. This alibi comes from misunderstanding the concept of willpower. Willpower is a finite, but luckily for us a renewable source of energy. You can think of this as your life’s bar which exhibits how much willpower you have left.

You are not helping

It is being exhausted throughout the entire day. It’s not only when you push yourself to get up in the morning or drag yourself to the gym.  It’s also when you fight not to eat junk food on the night out with your friends or you just try to refuse to take a toothsome morsel of an aromatic cake during a family dinner. It is also when you fight for emotional control. When you restrain yourself from exploding with irritation. When you try to hold your tears. When you try to be happy while you feel lousy. All those things ravage the level of your life bar even more.

1 %

There is another thing that 99 percent of us don’t realize about the willpower. Are you in that 1 percent? Let’s see. Can you guess what is the biggest devourer of your willpower? The biggest drainer, consumer, destroyer or whatever you want to call it, is simply the decision making process. It works the same way every day. The more we overthink any decision, the more time we spend on it, the more time we deliberate and ponder. All that time we stay in the decision making process, all those things makes us simply lose more and more willpower.

Renewable resource

As mentioned before the good news is that this is a renewable resource. Sleeping and eating work as a major reviver. We can also stretch and strengthen the stock of reserves by exerting the willpower. Forcing yourself to get up in the morning, forcing yourself to go to the gym when you don’t want to, pushing your plate while there’s still food on it, are the simplest examples of strengthening your willpower.

More is not better

If after reading this you think that in order to achieve anything you need more willpower, you are not paying attention. Throw that belief out the window and read closely.

Use it wisely

It’s not about the size of your motivation life bar. People that gained mastery over themselves are the ones that set up their life in the way that allows them to use the least of willpower throughout the day. Going on your Journey and trying to accomplish your dreams and vision is not about fighting your inner battles day after day. It is about setting up your day, your habits, your environment so you don’t have to struggle so many times during the day. This will allow you to conserve your willpower for the really meaningful battles while you perform actions with little or no conscious thought.

Do you want to learn how to do it? Do you want to learn how to use willpower? - coming soon
